Une nuit, dans une taverne, il eut Wang-Fô pour compagnon de table. Le vieil homme avait bu pour se mettre en état de mieux peindre un ivrogne ; sa tête penchait de côté, comme s’il s’efforçait de mesurer la distance qui séparait sa main de sa tasse. Monika Bulaj / Bułaj, ur. 1966, jest niezależną fotoreporterką, reporterem, pisarką, autorką filmów dokumentalnych, członkiem TED oraz nauczycielem reportażu i kuratorką.

Studiowała filologię polską na Uniwersytecie Warszawskim, oraz teatr awangardowy i taniec we Włoszech. Uczestniczyła w zajęciach grupy Gardzienice oraz w warsztatach teatralnych trupy Petera Brooka i Commedia dell’Arte Claudii Contin, studiowała taniec na Bali, taniec współczesny i wu-shu. Do 2002 roku pracowała jako reżyser teatralny, nauczycielka, aktorka, tancerka i choreograf.

Bada duchowe kresy Azji, Afryki, Ameryki Łacińskiej i Europy Wschodniej. Publikuje m. in. w “Granta Magazine”, “National Geographic”, “GEO”, “La Repubblica”, “Corriere della Sera”, “Courrier International”, “Revue XXI”, “The New York Times”, “The Guardian”, “TIME”.

Autorka m. in. książek: “Libya Felix (Mondadori), “Figli di Noè” (Frassinelli), “Rebecca e la pioggia” (Frassinelli), “Gerusalemme perduta” z Paolo Rumizem (Frassinelli),”Genti di Dio” (Frassinelli, Postcart), “Boży ludzie. Podróż po kres Europy” (Bosz), “Nur. La luce nascosta dell’Afghanistan” (Electa Mondadori), “Nur. Zapiski afgańskie” ( National Geographic), “Where Gods Whisper” w języku angielskim i włoskim w wydawnictwie Contrasto. Włoskie wydanie książki “Nur” zostało wybrane przez Time w 2013 jako jedna z najlepszych książek fotograficznych roku.

Reżyserowała film dokumentalny “Figli di Noè/Dzieci Noego” o Azerbejdżanie, napisała scenariusze do filmów dokumentalnych, w tym filmu “Romani rat/Noc Romów” (2002), w reżyserii M. Orlandi, o Holocauście Romów.

Monika wykłada na uniwersytetach i w szkołach, w więzieniach i klasztorach, jest zapraszana na konferencje TED Global, News Exchange, Les Tribunes de la Presse, podróżuje z konferencjami miastach i wioskach włoskiej prowincji, prowadzi warsztaty fotograficzno-reporterskie “Creative Nonfiction/Writing the Reality” i projekty kuratorskie.

Wróciła do teatru w 2010 roku, by prezentować na scenach Włoch, Polski i Francji reportaże na żywo (teatr dokumentalny) oraz by uczyć dzieci enklaw i gett teatru, tańca oraz fotografii.

Jej wystawy – fotografie i opowieści – eksponowane były m.in. w Pałacu Dodżów w Wenecji; Palazzo delle Esposizioni w Rzymie; w San Malo podczas festiwalu podróżników Etonnants Voyageurs; w Kairze, pod patronatem rządu włoskiego; na Zamku w Otranto przy międzynarodowym sympozjum Negba zorganizowanym przez żydowską wspólnotę Włoch; w Muzeum Żydowskim w Bologni i Trieście. Wystawa “Aury” została eksponowana przez Watykan podczas konferencji międzywyznaniowej o Chrystusie w Rzymie oraz Asyżu. Jej fotografie znajdują się w Kolekcji Leica i w prywatnych zbiorach na całym świecie. Współpracuje z radiem i telewizją, Repubblica TV, Rai TV Educational, itd.

Laureatka nagród w dziedzinie fotografii i literatury, m.in. Narodowej Nagrody Non-violenza: “za jej pracę fotografki, reporter i dokumentalistki, za pokazanie skutków wojny, i badanie umysłu człowieka, jego głodu religijności, czułości i godności. MB czyni niewidzialne widzialnym, tworząc obraz jedności ludzkiej rodziny.”
