NUR\/LIGHT.\u00a0Afghan Diaries \u00a0<\/span>is an exhibition of photographer Monika Bulaj, which after being presented in Venice in the Loggia of the Palazzo Ducale and Rome to the Photographic Workshops, is housed in Trieste, in the evocative setting of the former Fish Market – Hall of Enchantment, enriched with new images and texts, interventions in the city’s open spaces and a conference theme.<\/p>\n

NUR\/LIGHT.\u00a0Afghan Diaries<\/span> is a collection of images of great quality: In addition to the impeccable technical\/composition of photographs, realized alike in color and black and white, stands out the author’s sensibility, which creates a series of intense images, sophisticated, experienced and brave as the business itself.\u00a0<\/span>Refusing to travel with the military as a photographer ’embedded’, Monika Bulaj was able to “enter” and mingle with people and traditions of the places visited, whether Kyrgyz villages to cities – Kabul as a spectrum, resulting in complete confidence, enough to be able a shot in delicate situations such as hospitals, mosques, public baths, gymnasiums, schools and prisons.\u00a0<\/span>His work also highlights another Afghanistan, often hidden by stereotypes and prejudices masked by, the women, told through photographs that capture their genuine expressions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

From the travel notes of Monika Bulaj\u00a0<\/span>“Kabul\u00a0in winter nights, its archipelago of villages abusive without sewers, electricity, where the kids get up at four in the morning to win their heavy tank of water.<\/i>\u00a0<\/span>The singing of Sufi ceremonies, rites of magic to compensate for the lack of medicines, villages entirely of opium addicts, because there is no other defense against pain.<\/i>\u00a0<\/span>The wives sold for debts, hamman male, the cult of the body of the twenty-first century Afghan warrior in body-gym, the drama of the new epidemic of self-immolation and anti-personnel mines, which increase rather than decrease.<\/i>\u00a0<\/span>The single and solitary work of the ICRC Emergency and Alberto Cairo, and then the illegal Shiite rituals, letters with death threat posted by the Taliban at night the door of those who dare to send their daughters to school.<\/i>\u00a0<\/span>The juvenile prisons where they are thrown into the teens fleeing forced marriages or shelters where they are hiding from prison, from the vengeance of the clan and their family.<\/i>\u00a0<\/span>We watched all this from the porthole of an armored car but with the Afghan eyes watching him from the road.<\/i>\u00a0<\/span>Who cares about the Kuchi, the last and the last of the last nomadic, deprived of their pastures and reduced to a shell in the cities, in houses of the mid-holes where babies do not survive the winter?<\/i>\u00a0<\/span>But maybe now all Afghans are becoming Kuchi, displaced people, sitting on their bundles waiting for a flight impossible.<\/i>\u00a0<\/span>A people, nevertheless, able to laugh and play with passion, listen to music and dancing, singing loudly.<\/i>\u00a0<\/span>And here’s the barber was happy that Osama Bin Laden in a television drama, gambling around armies of chicks in the war theater in the neighborhood, the laughter around the ritual fights between camels.<\/i>\u00a0<\/span>The families of the Taliban at the front, the leaders repentant murderers, prostitutes nomadic girls, the hopeless struggle of the Kyrgyz and sheva desert mountains of the North.<\/i>\u00a0<\/span>And then the continent women, the women, their dreams, aspirations, combating depression and self-fulfillment in a hot tribal context.<\/i>\u00a0<\/span>An overview of a country that breaks our\u00a0<\/i>prejudices, fears and taboos. “<\/i><\/p>\n

Again, just Bulaj Monika describes the project in Trieste\u00a0<\/span>“The\u00a0Old Fish Market, with its smell of seaweed and golden water of black stone, was perhaps the secret heart of Trieste.<\/i>\u00a0<\/span>Sliced by rays of light, majestic and transparent, this could seem like the Parthenon in Vienna on the Adriatic.<\/i>\u00a0<\/span>Or, the agora of fishermen with faces like pumpkins roasted, Austrian and Jewish housewives, farmers and Slovenian Greek\u00a0rulers.<\/i>\u00a0<\/span>And, then, the\u00a0<\/span>gymnasium, where the confused hum of voices, the drone of recalls, children learned the names of fish, boats and twenty.<\/i>\u00a0<\/span>The Trieste was called Santa Maria del loads.<\/i>\u00a0<\/span>We came in as we enter into a basilica, instinctively looking for the altar, the columns and aisles.<\/i>\u00a0<\/span>We have created a minimal installation, clear the scaffolding of a temple is not finished, as in a city under siege, where people have forgotten their dreams, or to have lost my strength.<\/i>\u00a0<\/span>We filled with voices of bazaars and streets of Kabul, with weeping of women, children and songs of Sufi mystics.<\/i>\u00a0<\/span>Howling, neighing, bleating of great silence of the Hindukush and Pamir.<\/i>\u00a0<\/span>The faces of the Afghans were lying naturally in almost Byzantine iconostasis empty niches, already present in its original plan.<\/i>\u00a0<\/span>But also look out the windows and walled gardens on fallow alleys of the City.<\/i>\u00a0<\/span>Pass the thresholds of the doors locked, inhabit abandoned houses, mingle with the shadows of passers-by.<\/i>\u00a0<\/span>Their presence is discreet, just a trace, a whisper:<\/i>\u00a0<\/span>AFGHANS\u00a0PASSAGES IN\u00a0TRIEST.<\/i>\u00a0<\/span>But the exhibition, is also and above all a chance meeting with the great witnesses of Afghan history, researchers, journalists, diplomats and doctors.<\/i>\u00a0<\/span>Their stories will be devoted to the three day meeting<\/i>\u00a0<\/span>AFGHANISTAN, THE BIG GAME\u00a0<\/span>OVER,\u00a0to be held in the Auditorium of the former Fish Market -Hall of Enchantment 7 to 9 September next, during which we will speak of spirituality and anthropology, history and current affairs, war and everyday life, with particular attention to the legal issues and odyssey of Afghan refugees in Europe “.<\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
